MaineGeneral Medical Center

MaineGeneral Medical Center is a large regional medical provider in the Kennebec Valley Region in Maine.  Their two main campuses include the newly constructed Alfond Center for Health and the newly renovated Thayer Center for Health.

Welch Sign was contracted to provide budget development, design assist, consultation, fabrication and installation of comprehensive interior wayfinding, branding and donor recognition systems for both projects. An important aspect of our role was to be part of the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) team. IPD is a project delivery method that integrates people, systems, business structures and practices into a process that collaboratively harnesses the talents and insights of all participants. The implementation of collaborative design assistance is a key component in the IPD process. As part of the IPD team, we were able to provide valuable input allowing the client to reduce costs and increase efficiencies. 

Using evidence based design as a foundation, the design team developed an interior wayfinding system that integrated images of nature as environmental cueing elements.  The reference to the outdoors was reinforced with large format art panels and an art glass donor recognition wall.  Story and history walls as well as inspirational quotes were installed throughout the facility to highlight MaineGeneral Health’s institutional brand and values.
